Atopic Dermatitis in Children in the Summer Months

Atopic dermatitis, or skin asthma, is very common among babies and children who have very dry, sensitive skin that reacts rapidly and harshly to changes in weather and to contact with substances that could cause skin irritation.

Tips and advice to help the little ones through the hot summer months:

  • Babies and children have delicate, sensitive skin. Try to avoid contact with skin irritants like sand, grass, chlorine, saltwater, etc. Extended exposure to these irritants can cause a severe reaction and a flare-up of atopic dermatitis, which could mean more prolonged treatment.
  • If skin comes into contact with allergens, rinse immediately with water and bath oil suitable for sensitive skin. Avoid soap that could increase irritation.
  • On hot days, keep the temperature at home low because sweat aggravates the condition.
  • Do not overdress your baby or child. Choose cotton clothing over synthetic materials that increase perspiration without absorbing it. Friction between synthetic material and skin affected by atopic dermatitis can exacerbate skin rashes.
  • Limit bath time. Use products suitable for atopic dermatitis like bath mousse or bath oil.
  • Be sure to use gentle skincare products that do not damage the skin’s natural layer of protection.
  • Choose laundry detergent that has been tested for sensitive skin.
  • Apply moisturizer specially formulated to treat atopic dermatitis several times a day to both prevent and treat flare-ups.
  • If food allergies are suspected, contact your child’s physician.
