Removing Makeup Without Damaging the Skin

Many women like makeup. They apply a wide range of products and enjoy alternating looks according to taste, mood and circumstances. Yet makeup removal is no less important than precision with the makeup brush. Keeping skin clean and healthy offers more precise, effective makeup application.

Good makeup application starts with a clean, moisturized face. Use a facial toner to balance skin acidity. This helps the skin deal with synthetic ingredients in makeup and prevents redness and irritation resulting from dry skin.

First, cleanse with therapeutic products specially formulated for sensitive skin that contain natural oils and plants. Use only a small amount of cleanser. It is better to cleanse twice, each time with a very small amount of cleanser, than to use too much cleanser which can be difficult to rinse and in most instances, leaves residue that can cause irritation.

Avoid harsh cleansing

The standard makeup removal method is to use cleansing cream, soap or mousse specially formulated for removing makeup, excess oil and external pollutants. Cleansing cream is excellent for removing heavy, oily makeup that can only be dissolved by massaging the skin. Choose a cream specially formulated for sensitive skin that does not contain harsh fragrances or too many chemicals. Another way to remove light makeup is to use a water-soluble mousse as a final rinse before cleansing.

Recent years have shown an increase in the use of water-soluble (hydrophilic) oils that can dissolve makeup without irritating or drying out the skin. Hydrophilic oil can remove most makeup (both oil-based and water-based) from sensitive areas of the skin. To complete cleansing, use a facial toner that contains ingredients that gently massage the skin. A facial peel can also be used to cleanse the skin and effectively remove makeup. It is very important to avoid harsh cleansing that places prolonged, excessive pressure on the skin. Excessive facial scrubbing can scratch the surface of the skin and dilate capillaries, and can damage the skin’s natural layer of protection.

Protect thin skin

Waterproof makeup contains water, oil and silicone-based ingredients that prevent makeup from rinsing off too easily. While this has its advantages, waterproof makeup has its disadvantages, too: it needs to be removed before going to sleep, it clogs pores, and it prevents perspiration and penetration of oxygen. Waterproof makeup often leaves an invisible layer of calcium after cleansing that stems from using products that are not suited to hard Israeli water. Ideally, choose products that are suited to Israeli conditions and climate.

Use specially formulated makeup remover and warm water to remove waterproof makeup. Complete with facial toner to gently peel the skin. To remove makeup from the delicate eye and lip area, use products specially formulated for thin, delicate skin that have been dermatologically tested for sensitive skin. To remove eye makeup, use a water-soluble mousse or hydrophilic oil. Choose products formulated for eye makeup removal that do not cause stinging or redness.

To remove makeup from the décolletage area, which is also thin and sensitive, use cleansing products for sensitive skin that do not contain detergents that can irritate or dry the skin. After removing either regular or waterproof makeup, apply moisturizer to the face and neck while the skin is still damp in order to prevent dryness. Use quality moisturizer to preserve moisture in the middle layers of the skin.
